WHY PREDICTIONS WORKS?
I often ask myself why prediction in astrology works and keeps working. Many times it works regardless of our will or desires (although, in a curious way, never against our actions). My personal bond with astrology has always shown me that the future happens, and that planetary energies unravel their strengths with their range of multiple (but delineated) possibilities. Our role in the play of life can be that of a mere extra or we can be the étoile, but what really happens is that in different moments we play different roles, framed in the specific socio-economic context in which we are born and in which we develop.
But even when things actually happen, even when I am shocked every time I see transits, returns, and progressions in motion, and becoming real through real people, this does not explain why astrological prediction continues to work, after 5000 years of Western civilization history.
During the 1980s, many astrologers became led by psychology, and produced interpretations aligned with psychoanalysis. In this line of work, having Saturn placed on your fourth house was a good way to explain why your childhood felt cold, often involving an authoritarian father; having Jupiter in Sagittarius allowed understanding of why a person sought higher education in order to express their hunger for adventure (that same hunger that was restrained by their Saturn-like Super Ego). Most of the solid psychoanalytical branches of astrology refrain from delivering a predictive reading, for they assume that astrology works primarily as a self-knowledge tool, and that the psyche unravels inwards, and not through external events, upon which prediction focuses. Nowadays there are other ways of understanding astrology that are much more popularly employed, but I believe that the psychological approach to astrology remains very powerful and illuminating when reading a person's natal chart for the first time, since through it clients find an emotional support that makes them think that the problem or pain they suffer has a rational elucidation, written in a strange language engraved in the natal map the astrologer is showing them. It is soothing to believe that the thing that breaks our heart has an external explanation, and we also love to think that eventual success is also written in the stars, and that it can't be taken from us because it is imprinted upon us at the moment of our birth.
OK. So I use Freud to explain, for example, why it is so difficult for me to make up my mind (too many planets on fixed signs) but at the same time people see me as someone spontaneous and determined (Aries ascending). But why should I believe in someone who tells me that next year, on month "x", I will finally sell my house and move? Why trust that the lawsuit I have been dealing with for eight long years will be solved within the next three months? Why do I, a rational being, born and raised in Judeo-Christian Western civilization values, soaked in liberal and capitalist speeches, nurtured by good will and faith in meritocracy, decide to surrender (and I even pay for it!) to the technical-"supernatural" words of an astrologer that wants to tell me about my future?
I believe that the answer lies in the great mythological solidity that human life has proven to have, and that an astrological reading also has. Joseph Campbell showed, in his seminal The Hero with a Thousand Face (first published in 1949) how very different cultures, such as the hopi Indians, the Greeks, different African tribes and hundreds of other groups, compiled in their legends, myths and folk stories, a history that is the common ground for both mankind and the individual; each and every one of us seem to live our own private version of the renowned "hero's journey":
departure
- abandoning what I think is safe, my house, the things I know but which eventually become boring
initiation
- the starting point of our mission, the seek for change and the beginning of the difficult task of generating that change
apotheosis
- the final battle and the obtaining of the prize
return
- reaching back home or to a calm state, but now successful, more self assured, more mature.
The hero's journey tale works because it is optimistic, because it is the tale that countless generations before us have told us; it is the story of how the weak or the poor get the most valuable treasures: David defeating Goliath, Frodo destroying Sauron's ring, Ulysses getting back to Ithaca, the poor peasant girl obtaining the love of the rich heir in the soap operas, or Ra surviving the snake's poison and becoming Egypt's king of Day.
It also works because the adventure can start because of the wish of the hero, or by sheer chance - like Frodo receiving the ring from Bilbo as a legacy, not knowing what will happen later; or like Little Red Riding Hood, innocently walking through the woods to take food to her grandmother and bumping into the wolf. These stories suggest that the future has challenges for us, no matter whether we look for them or not, and that is why the astrologer is the one that can identify the possible axis through which our call for adventure will activate. And this is key, for as Campbell states, when the hero does not answer the call "because it is always possible to look the other way," the adventure becomes something negative and potentially catastrophic. Following Campbell,
… locked up in his own annoyance, in hard work or in 'culture', the individual loses the power of the significance of his affirmative action and becomes a victim that needs to be saved. His blossoming world turns into a desert of dry stones, and his life loses all meaning.
This is why astrological prediction works, because it helps us play the leading role in our own life, indicating the possible meanings that our destiny can shape. And the true adventure that life is, then appears to be something safer, for prediction intertwines us with the millennial tradition of our cultural horizon, in which many others before us have faced dangers, changes, and challenges, and have found a way to beat them. Aby Warburg, the hugely influential art historian (or art psychologist, as he preferred) stated that the true memory of mankind is not of a traditional historical type. Instead, he claimed that that memory was actually emotional through the concept of Pathosformeln, "pathetic formula" that are effective because they approach us not from the intellectual-rational scope, but from what is emotional in us, from our unconscious memory that is rhizomatic (and, to add up some astrology, also lunar and Cancerian). This creates a bond of union among all individuals that is unattainable through other means. Pathosformeln, being emotional, are transmitted in an unconscious level and they represent the opportunity of identifying ourselves with the Other and with others; in this sense, to comply with our mythical destinies is to walk the path of the history of mankind, and not feel lost in it.
This is why, I believe, astrological prediction does work: because it gives us hints to be the leading character of our own life in a safe haven; for others before and at the same time are walking or have walked the same road. Even when we may not share common interests, traditions, class, nationality, language, we can all identify emotionally with the myth that another person is embodying, and so looking into the future not only does work, not only is important, but it is also good, for it makes us feel together, in spite of the extreme bourgeois individualism. All of us on the same boat, each one of us trying to make our own shore, battling alone and together against waves that sometimes drown us, and others push us peacefully and gently towards our destinies.

ASTROLOGIA HORARIA-PREDICTIVO
La astrología horaria es el arte de resolver (casi) cualquier tipo de preguntas o inquietud que pueda surgirle a cualquier persona, en cualquier momento. Es seguramente la forma primordial de la astrología y la base de todas las demás técnicas y ramas de nuestro arte. Es la práctica predictiva de mayor efectividad, en tanto es inmediata, y de sorprendente precisión a la hora de definir tema, tiempo y lugar del evento que sucederá.
Este curso apunta a transmitir las cuestiones básicas que están en juego a la hora de evaluar e interpretar una carta horaria. Los asistentes deberán contar con formación fundamental en interpretación astrológica (planetas, casas, signos, aspectos, lectura de efemérides), pero no es indispensable manejar técnicas predictivas (revoluciones, progresiones y otras). Una vez completado el curso, los participantes tendrán las herramientas para resolver preguntas horarias de cualquier índole.
Propongo un curso en modalidad presencial, un encuentro semanal de dos horas con un total de doce encuentros. En cada clase se proveerán materiales para practicar (incluidos en el valor del curso) y se dará orientación bibliográfica. La predicción es una de las herramientas más atractivas y apasionantes de la astrología. Una vez que hemos superado la dificultad que implica sintetizar la interpretación de la carta natal, comenzamos otro desafío, que es el de ver qué es lo que el destino le está ofreciendo a nuestros clientes, familiares y amigos, o a nosotros mismos.
Para evitar alarmarnos cuando vemos un presagio ominoso, o ilusionarnos por demás cuando vemos el éxito escrito en el futuro, o quedar en blanco cuando vemos indicios que parecen transmitirnos pronósticos contradictorios, propongo este curso/taller de astrología predictiva, que tiene por objeto evaluar, comparar y jerarquizar técnicas predictivas usuales para lograr dar diagnósticos adecuados y no omnipotentes, sino estando atentos a la polisemia de la simbología astrológica. Buscaremos una predicción responsable a partir de la síntesis de los conflictos aparentes que tienen las técnicas de pronóstico con el objetivo de darle a nuestros interlocutores herramientas realistas y cohesivas a la hora de encarar su futuro cercano.
El curso está orientado a personas que manejan con soltura la interpretación astrológica (o que han transitado mi curso de Astrología para Principiantes), y a profesionales en astrología que quieren pulir su técnica a través de la reflexión y la práctica conjunta. No veremos en este curso técnicas avanzadas de predicción, sino que nos concentraremos en aquellas que utilizamos cotidianamente y que han probado tener buenos resultados. Como siempre, trabajaremos también con las herramientas informáticas (software astrológico) y de la Web que nos permiten ampliar y ajustar nuestros conocimientos y prácticas.
El curso es trimestral, con una reunión semanal presencial de dos horas. Estudiaremos y practicaremos las diferentes técnicas a partir de una temática específica en el curso, aunque no sólo nos cerraremos a ese tipo de predicciones. De chicos nos gustaba leer los horóscopos de las revistas y prestábamos atención a los folletos y tarjetitas con la descripción de los signos. De más grandes, alguien con un poco más de información nos habló de la Luna, del Ascendente y quizás, como regalo de cumpleaños, alguna vez nos hicieron una revolución solar. Pero queremos saber más de lo maravilloso de la astrología, y, sobre todo, queremos poder sentir que este arte está más cerca de nuestras manos. Les propongo, por esto, un curso de astrología para principiantes, en donde analizaremos las bases de la ASTROLOGIA VEDICA orientadas a la lectura del mapa natal de un individuo. La parte teórica será acompañada en todas las clases con práctica y tareas que no se terminan en la clase, sino que apuntan a que la astrología se vuelva uno más de los prismas con los que decodificamos al mundo que nos rodea y a nosotros mismos. Además, aprenderemos a utilizar con efectividad y buenos resultados los programas de astrología que más circulan entre los astrólogos. (en particular el WinStar, pero también usaremos el Solar Fire).
El objetivo es ayudar a la formación de astrólogos que puedan interpretar cartas natales desde la solidez técnica, estimulando la intuición y la sensibilidad que implica la lectura astrológica y con una comprensión cabal de la importancia y la problemática filosófica que está anudada al arte astrológico desde sus comienzos.

THE GURU
A great key is to establish an unshakeable connection with the guru. It is to nourish this connection to keep the flame lit. This was my path, that way I got realized. I connected myself with the guru through diksha (spiritual initiation). He gave me a mantra and during three years of purification I still forgot him and the marriage was still shaken by the samskaras - imprints from the past - that I brought in the form of vanity, selfishness and in the form of a series of wrong ideas about who I was; that made me forget Him until the moment when the connection was established permanently. My Guru and I became one, there were no more differences, the marriage became eternal; only one mind, one heart. Then I could remember that I am not a body, a name, I am not a story… I am eternal and I am here for compassion to help remembering this truth: you and I are one and in the deepest, you are pure bliss, light and love. If you believe that you are anything else that is not light and love, you are mistaken, you are identified with some thought.
So, cultivate that connection, dedicate yourself to your sadhana so that the field is created and prepared for the Guru´s grace act through you. This is what you can do: practice your sadhana, read sacred texts. This will help maintain awaken the divine memory so that you can put into practice the spiritual teachings that you have received. Sometimes teachings are transmitted in a very direct way, but not always you can bring them to your practical life because you get lost. And, in a day like today when you are excited about giving me a present I tell you that the best present you can give me is to practice these teachings in your life. This is the best gift. The best gift you can give me is to be happy, is to celebrate life, to commit yourself truthfully with joy, love and doing good…
I know that to have a commitment with good you have to be brave enough to face the evil inside of you and transform it; to be brave enough to identify your mistakes and your identification with your mental creations so that you are able to let them go.
Yesterday we were here and some people were sharing their experiences. One of them said: “I´ve realized I am a victim of myself”. Did you realize that? Great! What about now? Let it go now!
You should honestly ask yourself: Is that what I am? If I let go of this victim, will there be nothing left? When you ask yourself truthfully, you are already on the command of your personality. Your observer is present and is taking care of it. In this case the victim is only a small piece of your personality, a defense mechanism that you have created to defend yourself. This is not you; it is not your final reality.
This connection with the guru will, in the first moment, undo your false identity. The closer you get to the guru, the more you feel this fear of annihilation. If you are still identified with your mask it will be dissolved up to the moment when the truth of who you are starts manifesting itself. And the truth is that you and the guru are one. You are love, light, prosperity, health, happiness.
Happiness is the main signal that God is manifesting. What is the thing in the world that human beings most deeply want? To feel joy; and to feel joy you have to feel peace inside. This peace comes from God. God is the one who provides happiness and joy.
In a certain moment in the evolution journey happiness comes when you realize one or another thing; when you get something from outside. However, on further stages of the consciousness evolution what everybody expects is causeless joy; to be happy just because you are happy, because you breathe, because you are here, because you love… to be happy not because you need to be happy.
This is God answering your prayers.
So keep this teaching in your heart. Do not spend one day of your life without asking consciously for this connection with the divine; do not go not even for one night to your bed without praying to God to answer your prayers in the form of happiness in your heart. Never go to bed without Him. He must be your main lover. He should answer your prayers. God answers your prayers in the form of happiness.
The guru is an oasis in the desert. It is almost like a shooting star that passes very quickly.
How lucky you are! I know that it is great luck because I consider myself very lucky since I have met my guru again, since He found me. In the moments when I become more earthy and I become more individualized in the body I think “how lucky I am, how lucky!” Lucky for having listened the call since saints are constantly calling. All the time they are praying “prabhu aap jago, paramatma jago, mere sarve jago, sarvatra jago”. God awake! Which God? The one that is inside of you. Wake up! The God of love, love that is inside of you. May you wake up love. Wake up, wake up, wake up! Be free from this dream that you are miserable, a needy one that has nothing to give to nobody. You are love itself. You are the source of life. Wake up! God wake up everywhere.
Saints are making this prayer constantly. In a certain moment you get mature enough so that you are able to hear the call. Get up, go to the wise men and receive from them their holy teachings that will make you awaken. This is the call. I was lucky to hear that call and I received the grace. And I see that you also had the same luck to be here receiving the grace that will provide you with the dispelling of the shadows that bring forgetfulness, because if there is an evil thing in this world I would call it forgetfulness. Forgetfulness that you are a manifestation of the divine love and light. I do not get tired of speaking the same thing again and again. You are light, you are love.
The essence of my Sankalpa (promise) is to transform the play of suffering into the play of bliss. This is the essence of my play: the end of the play of suffering. That only happens when you remember your true nature and that God and you are one only. Then grace showers on your heart and you are taken by bliss and there is no more space for suffering.
So, my beloved friends, I am very happy that you were able to hear the prayers from the saints, the chanting that flows from my heart and that you were able to come here on this Gurupurnima. May you never lose the possibility of making pranam to a guru, or making a puja. Never forget that, until you are ready to make a puja every day and remember the guru every day.
Blessed be each one of you. May all beings, from all realms be happy, may existence provide them with all their needs. May all realize God.
